Failing Grade for SD42 Emergency Preparedness

The following article is part of our 2021 School Preparedness Series.  CLICK HERE to learn more about this feature.

The first district that we are reviewing in our School Preparedness Series is our home district of Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, School District 42. To our surprise, and immediate concern, 64% of the schools said they were unprepared, refused to answer or were unsure if they were prepared. Also concerning is that 5 of the 6 high schools fell under this category. One of them was not even sure what we were asking, so that just shows their level of unpreparedness. We were also told by some elementary school representatives in the region that their students would be diverted to the nearest high school in the event of a major earthquake. So, if the high schools are unprepared, why are they diverting elementary school students to the high schools? Especially since 41% of the elementary schools say that they are fully equipped in case of a disaster, unless they were embellishing how prepared they are.

Here is a breakdown of the responses from the 6 high schools and 22 elementary schools in School District 42. 4 of the 6 high schools said they were flat out unprepared, 1 of them said they didn’t know, and one said they were prepared. Among the elementary schools 5 of them said they were not equipped, 7 said they were unsure, 1 refused to answer and 9 said they were. However, some of those are also ones that would supposedly be diverted to a high school in case of emergency, so we are unsure of the validity of this data. The final tally is as follows:

  • 32% Unprepared
  • 32% Unsure or Unwilling to Answer
  • 36% Prepared

We are sad to report that at only 33% Prepared, School District 42 gets a failing grade. This school district needs to seriously reevaluate their disaster and emergency preparedness protocols and their emergency supplies on hand. It is their responsibility to do what needs to be done to make schools as safe and efficient as they possibly can be for our children and our community.

If you have a child in school district 42 in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area you should contact your school or district PAC (Parent Advisory Council). Ask them to advocate for emergency preparedness in your child’s school before it is too late.
